Hist 10 TermsMesopotamia -Valley civilization between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers. Know as the “land between the rivers” in Greek.Sumerians - Creators of the first Mesopotamian civilization. Origins remain unclear. Established a number of independent cities, Eridu, Ur, Uruk, Umma, and Lagash by 3000 BCE. Most prominent building in a Sumerian city was the temple, often built atop Ziggurats. Primarilyagricultural. Four major social groups: elites, dependent commoners, free commoners, and slaves. Sargon– (2334 – 2279 BCE) – Akkadian, founder of the Akkad Dynasty. Empire ended becauseof invaders around 2100 BCE. He used former rulers as governors of conquered city-states.Hammurabi - (1792-1750 BCE) – created new Mesopotamian kingdom, capital is Babylon. Brought peace, encouraged trade, brought an economic revival. Empire fell after string of weak Kings.Code of Hammurabi – 282 laws of strict justice. Nile River – main river used by the Egyptian civilization. -United upper and lower Egypt. Created fertile banks, annual flooding.-Made transportation and communication easier. Menes – (Around 3100 BCE) – King Menes united villages of both Upper and Lower Egypt intoa single kingdom. Created first Egyptian royal dynasty. Ruler would be called “king of Upper and Lower Egypt”-Double Crown – combination of the White Crown of Upper Egypt and the Red crownof Lower Egypt.Khufu - King that oversaw the construction of the largest of the pyramids of Giza around 2540 BCE. The pyramids cover 13 acres. Pyramids stood as symbol of royal power.Nubia - located at the northern part of modern Sudan. Became the independent state of Kush after disintegratin of the Egyptian New Kingdom. Harkhuf – (Governor around 2290 - 2270 BCE) – Governor of Southern Upper Egypt who journeyed extensively throughout Nubia. Overseer of caravans. Hyksos – A group of people that invaded Egypt around 1650 BCE from western Asia. Used horse-drawn war chariots. Ruled Egypt for almost 100 years. 18thdynasty of Pharaohs used new weapons to throw off Hyksos domination, reunited Egypt, and established the New Kingdom
(1550-1070BCE). Hatshepsut – (1503-1480 BCE) – One of the first women to become pharaoh. Built a great temple at Deir el bahri near Thebes. Succeded by Thutmosis III, her nephew. (1480-1450BCE) Tuthmosis III – (1480-1450 BCE) – Newphew of Queen Hatshepsut. Succeeded his aunt and led 17 campaigns into Syria and Palestine, reached Euphrates River. Amenhotep IV – (1364-1347 BCE) – Pharaoh from the 18thdynasty. Introduced the worship of Aten, god of the sun disk as the sole god. Closed temples of other gods. Attmped and failed at religious change. Changed name to Akhenaten (“Servant of Aten”). -Religious attention caused him to ignore foreign affairs and lost Syria and Palestine. Kush – Came after the disintegration of the Egyptian New Kingdom. Formerly Nubia.
