Alexander Israel Hodges F 11-11:50 Anthropology 005 Problem Set # 1: Adaptation and Natural Selection 1. Evolution by natural selection is the best available explanation for the well-adapted condition of most organisms. A. What do we mean by well-adapted? An organism that is well adapted exhibits traits that are advantageous to the environment that it inhabits.  This  includes traits that are well suited for it to survive and flourish (reproduce).  For example, the Giraffe has a very long  neck in order to reach the branches that are very high up in order to feed it’s self.  B. Give two examples of adaptations, one from humans and one from some other species. One from the humans is our ability to walk bipedally.  This was an adaptation that led us to where we are today.  The Giraffe has a very long neck; obviously it did not start this way.  Once competition for the low lying shrubbery  became intense, it may have adapted and its neck became long to be able to reach greenery other omnivores could not  reach.  C. What is the ultimate function of all adaptations? REPRODUCTION D. What are the prerequisites for the operation of natural selection and why is each necessary? 1) The struggle for existence:  The ability for any environment to support a population is always finite.  Thus, there is a  constant battle for resources and who survives and who dies is the result of getting these resources.  Those that are most  well adapted to this finite environment will be able to continue on in existence
