CIS 105 16/04/2008 22:51:00 CHAPTER 1 Information Systems: the way to think of a microcomputer is to realize that it is  one part of an information system. There are five parts of an information system: People- the most important part of an information system. People are touched  hundreds of times daily by computers. Examples include: o IT works for you o Tips o Careers o Computing essentials Several interesting and practical applications. Includes personal  Web sites, using digital photography, and searching for job  opportunities.  Moore’s law-1969-Co-founder of Intel-computer processing  (speed) would double every 18 months, price will plummet.  o Tips- offer a variety of suggestions on such practical matters as how to  improve slow computer performance and how to protect your privacy  while on the Web.  o Careers- presents job descriptions, employment demands, educational  requirements, salary ranges, and advancement opportunities.  o Computing essentials- web site integrates the textbook with  information on the web including videos, animation, career information,  etc. Procedures- rules of how to use Software- programs consist of systems and application software. o System software- enables an application software to interact with  computer hardware. It consists of a variety of programs including: Operating systems,  utilities, and  device drivers. Coordinates resources, provide an interface for users  and comp. hardware, and run applications, Windows XP,  and Mac OS X are operating systems.

Device drivers- specialized programs to allow input and out put  devices to communicate with the rest of the computer.  Application software- includes basic and specialized  applications  (stuff you want to do). Basic applications- widely used in nearly all career areas.  Programs include browsers, word processors, spreadsheets,  database management systems, and presentation graphics.  Specialized applications- focus on specific disciplines and  occupations. These programs include graphics, audio, video,  multimedia, Web authoring, and  artificial intelligence (tries to  mimic a human being). Hardware-  4 types of computers: o Supercomputer o Mainframe o Minicomputer o Microcomputer Microcomputers can be desktops, laptops, tablets, and  PDA’s  (personal digital assistance) o There are  four basic categories System unit - the system cabinet or chassis contains the  electronic circuitry, including the microprocessor and memory  (RAM)

Input/output devices - translators b/t humans and computers.  Input devices include the keyboard and mouse. Output devices  include monitors (video display screens) and printers.
