Tsurumoto 1 Matt Tsurumoto Thompson English 1A T/Th. 11am-1pm 6 November 2005 A Nation in Decline In Jared Diamond’s “The Last Americans” he shows the future through the past, by comparing the Mayan’s to our present day civilization and what may happen in the not to distant future. Luc Sante takes a more local approach, examining what happened to New York while he lived there in his piece “My Lost City”. Although both Jared Diamond and Luc Sante illustrate concern of declining areas, both authors use symbolism as way to convey a new hope for the future. In Jared Diamond’s “The Last Americans” the Mayan’s create an uncanny mirror image of the American culture. The government is more concerned about what they want rather then what the people want. “A major reason was that their attention was evidently focused on the short-term concern of enriching themselves, waging wars, erecting monuments, competing with one another and extracting enough food from the peasants to support all those activities. Like most leaders throughout human history, the Maya kings and nobles did not have the leisure to focus on long-term problems, insofar as the perceived them” (Diamond 42).
