Yeelen Introduction to International Cinema’s Unit seven was concerned primarily with the decolonization of Algeria, specifically in the 1965 film The Battle of Algiers . Since the overall theme was decolonization, I was surprised to learn that the see also film Yeelen , had little, if nothing to do with decolonization. Instead of being a realistic film about the struggles to separate from African ancestors, Yeelen was about a young man with magical powers who travels through the harsh desert while avoiding his evil father. Perhaps a film like Yeelen could be read as a representational film depicting its protagonist, Niankoro, as a representative of African culture, a good-hearted and strong man who must battle against nature, others, his kin, and many other forces, eventually dying during the final battle. It is not as strong a representation as it is a fable, a tale of a brave warrior with larger-than-life powers who is able to overcome the boundaries put before him. Through this,
