Etruscans living in Italy during late Dark Ages & Archaic Time Period of Greece. Later Taken over by Latin speaking people called the Romans Herodotus recounts Lyndian origins of the Etruscans Herodotus tells us Etruscans came from Asian Minor, from an area called Lydia. There is evidence to support this (DNA and cranium studies that compare Lydians and these people support him) As early as 900 BC, Etruscans living in Italy and they have a lot of contact with Greeks shown via their art and trading. Imported Greek art (vases) and olive oil. Southern Italy: Greek Colonies Southern peninsula surrounded by water. Etruscans very sea-faring people. Increased cultural interaction in the Mediterranean, particularly eastern Mediterranean. They were pirates just like the Greeks . Each Etruscan cite was a separate city state and each had a KING. City states had common language, culture and religion. They also had an alphabet that is somehow derived from Greek alphabet, but still very obscure. Cities: inland about 3 miles, little physical remains of where they lived What we know about their lives is what we mainly know from their tombs – most still intact. Mainly little mounds in the country Necropolis: Necropoleis City of the Dead: necro means dead and polis means city. Constructed away from the city of the living. Even today zoning prohibits you from burying grandma in the background. Look like beehive tombs.
