Propositions About Communication I. You Cannot Not Communicate – everything you do is read by others. II. Meanings Are in People A. Not in Words --labels – Love might mean something different to other people. Words have different meanings to others, so might be interpreted differently. B. Not in Behavior – we look at someone and know we can trust what we see. Non-verbal communication/actions - -punctuation – how we look at actions. John said mary go home. Put comma after ‘said’ john is talking. Comma after john and mary then Mary is talking. III. Communication is Irreversible – once you say something you can never take it back. IV. Communication is Functional – Diff ways of communication A. Giving/Receiving Information – ex. College classes. B. Persuading/Influencing – to get someone to do something for you C. Affinity – to get someone to like you and we’ll communicate differently to get them to like you. D.
