Biology Exam 3 Study Sheet Metabolism     : total chemical activity of a living organism. o Consists of 1000’s of individual chemical reactions. o Builds up  of complexity (using energy) or  breaks down  (releasing energy) Anabolic reactions      (anabolism) link simple molecules together to form  more complex ones. Requires input of energy and captures it in chemical bonds that  are formed o Example: synthesis of a protein from amino acids Catabolic reactions      (catabolism) break down complex molecules into  simpler ones. Releases energy stored in chemical bonds Energy released drives anabolic reactions Energy:      the capacity for change. o First law of Thermodynamics : no cell creates or destroys energy; it can only  be  transformed (to heat) from one kind of energy to another.  The total energy before  and after the conversion is the same. Kinetic energy
