Ant 2 Mid-term exam Review Sheet The exam will be multiple choice, with some short definitions and a medium length essay. You should have read the readings and be able to answer questions about them. Some questions you are likely to see include some variation of the following. What Anthropologists do 1. Understand what it means to say that anthropology is the holistic and comparative study of humanity. 2. Be able to identify and distinguish between the four subfields of anthropology, and know which one this class is on. 3. Know what ethnography is and what “an ethnography” is. 4. Be able to understand the methods of anthropology and how they differ from the other social sciences (e.g., participant observation) The Concept of Culture 5. Understand what it means to say that culture is learned, shared, symbolic, all- encompassing, and more or less integrated. See Core Concepts and lectures. 6. Distinguish between ethnocentrism and cultural relativism and the strengths and weaknesses of the latter as ethical/political position. 7. Know the differences between cultural universals and particulars and be able to provide examples of each. 8. Know how culture emerged as a concept in Western thought, and the relevance of the following: the Enlightenment, the Romantic period intellectual reaction to the Enlightenment, colonialism and scientific racism. 9.
