Inclusive Pronoun Use Traditionally, he, him, and his were used to refer indefinitely to persons of either sex. You can avoid such usage in one of three ways: substitute a pair of pronouns (he or she, his or her); reword in the plural; or revise the sentence to avoid the problem. A journalist is stimulated by his deadline. (substitute pronouns) A journalist is stimulated by her deadline. A journalist is stimulated by his deadline (reword in the plural) Journalists are stimulated by deadlines. A journalist is stimulated by his deadline. (revise to avoid problem) A journalist’s deadline is stimulating. Gender Free/Gender Specific Rule Ask yourself, would you write the same thing about a person of the other sex?
