Ross Avilla (PSC 245) Discussion for Week 4 If I’ve learned anything this quarter, it’s that my conscious brain does not do much well. It does not actively will most of my behaviors, it becomes easily biased by everyday priming effects, it cannot process the vast majority of the information it’s being fed at any given moment, and it shouldn’t even be trusted to handle complex decision making tasks. What the heck do I use this thing for anyway? While I knew about most of these studies coming in, I’d never been bombarded by all of them at like this before. Now I can fully appreciate how truly inept my conscious mind is. Oh well, I guess when I think in terms of will, what does it matter? We obviously don’t have any type of free will in its truest sense. Every behavior and thought is rooted in antecedent causes based on past events caused by things before it and so on. If a will is truly free from the great wheel of causation, then where do its decisions really come from—pure random chaos? So
