Running head: Emotional Development in Early Childhood 2 Abstract This paper is on the Emotional Development in Early Childhood Education. It will discuss the different stages that children go through beginning from birth and continuing through out the rest of their lives. These stages include both positive such as being happy and surprised and negative emotions such has sadness and anger. We will discuss how the relationship with parents is essential for development. We will also discuss how the child’s everyday environment plays a role in their emotional development along with the child attachment to parents and caregivers. The second part of this paper the Application piece will discuss how parents can ensure that their child’s emotional development is proceeding in a healthy way it will also discuss different treatments for children who may suffer with emotional difficulties such as expressing their feelings and depression.

Running head: Emotional Development in Early Childhood 3 Issue Analysis Emotional development is an essential part of development and begins moments after birth. The child’s emotional development is influenced by numerous things. For instance the environment in which the baby is born into plays a huge role in all development especially emotionally. Another factor that contributes to their emotional development is their genetic make and the interactions that they have with all family members which later will reflect how they interact with their peers. Infants start showing emotions right away. The first sigh of emotion is crying. Crying is the main form of communication for infants. Crying allows the parents to know whether the baby is hungry, needs a diaper change or uncomfortable. Parents can distinguish the difference between each cry by listening carefully to sound of crying and the time when the crying starts. For example the baby might start screaming when it is close to his or her feeding time this will let the parent know that they are hungry. Another example is when the baby starts to cry after being feed or changed this could mean that the baby is tired and needs to be put down to sleep. As time goes on each parent realizes what the child will need trough his crying. Another stage in emotional development that starts during the first months of life is smiling. A new born baby tends to have reflex smiles. A reflex smile is a smile seen in the newborn that is usually spontaneous and appears to depend on some internal stimulus rather than on something external such as another person’s behavior (Parke & Gauvain, 2009 pg. 183). Around eight weeks of age an infant smile will reflect not only on internal stimulus but also on external stimulus such as people’s faces and voices.
