-the renaissance spirit contained the dimension of criticizing institutions/practices -practice of indulgences had been corrupted; not salvation, excuse for church to raise money -this practice stirred martin Luther to seek a reform within the church, then outside the church -as he sought outside revolution, he opened the door to a wider Catholicism and deeper questioning of aspects of roman Catholicism with protestants found to be man-made, not by god -all played into German sense that church was too Italian and that the state and society needed to be renewed and reformed and this meant religious change -once martin had protested, he found himself needing the protection of the German princes; they argued that their religious differences w/Catholicism gave them an excuse to revolt against Charles 5 th -they were using each other -in step w/spirit of renaissance, Protestants beginning with Luther and stretching to John Calvin (founder of Calvinism) began to believe that life on this earth was
