22 April 2015 Final Reflection Paper Ideas and conceptions of agency and submissiveness are central to a critical analysis of the history and present of women in India as they describe the fundamental everyday of everyday decision-making. The topic of “agency versus submissiveness” does not seem like the right locus point, as I don’t believe that agency and submissiveness are mutually exclusive – they can exist on the same plane. Agency is defined as “the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices” by the Merriam Webster dictionary. Examples of agency can range from choosing to brush one’s teeth in the morning to deciding to run for President. Every choice one makes in any given day is an example of that person acting on their agency. Submissiveness is defined as “ the tendency to yield to the will or authority of others” by the Merriam Webster dictionary. Examples of submissiveness can range from succumbing to peer pressure to obeying commands from an elder. An agential woman
