Journalism 110 Reaction Piece Mary Pickford Mary Pickford: The Actress Who Changed Motion Pictures Mary Pickford is a shinning star in the history of tinsel town. Not only the first big female star to show up on the big screen, but possibly the highest paid actress for her time. Her influence is felt throughout motion pictures everywhere as she is responsible for evolving the way actors approach movies and interact with the camera. Mary Pickford was born under the name Gladys Smith. Gladys was almost put up for adoption as a child and giving to a doctor to be raised. She would instead stay with her mother Charlotte, who was a great asset to her life and her career. Even as a child Mary was very adamant about becoming an actress. Early in her career she would end up meeting with a Broadway producer named Mr. Belasco, who would encourage her to keep working on her acting career and would get her on stage, in the theater for 8 dollars a week. Theatre companies soon feel in love with Gladys, as she was magnetic on stage.
