Evan Mulvihill 4/14/08 Chem 303 TA: Paulina Gonzales-Morales Summary A sample of chlorophyll A was prepared from mashing, dissolution, and column purification of fresh spinach purchased at a grocery store. The FTIR spectrum of this sample of chlorophyll A was acquired from a HP-8453E Spectroscopy System and used to determine the concentration of the solution, assuming Beer’s Law at absorbances of less than 1.0 AU, an extinction coefficient ε of 100,000 M -1 cm -1 , and a pathlength l of 1.0 cm. In the so-called “Experiment 1,” the relative fluorescence intensity of samples of varying concentration in Chlorophyll A were then acquired from a TD-700 (Turner) fluorometer.
