Disguised (to keep us from waking up and being denied fulfillment The need for Dream Interpretation for Dream Interpretation Neurotics have too little energy to adequately cope with reality. Reasons: Substantial id concerns The concerns are repressed from conscious awareness It takes energy to repress the id Too little energy is left for the ego Through dream interpretation unconscious complexes are uncovered/explained and the need for repression is reduced Anti-cathectic energy is returned to pool and can be used as cathectic energy Some challenges for Freud Is manifest content meaningless? Why is symbolism needed? Why are there so many symbols for the same referent? Are symbols reversible? Do psychiatrists demand symbolism? 9/13/07 Criticisms of Freudian Theory Lack of parsimony: Occam’s Razor (less is more- shave off the unneeded) Poor definitions: literal or metaphor? Untestability: “post-hoc analysis” (explanatory, not predictive) Sexist: females are castrated males But good “talking therapy”, heuristic, beautiful/all-encompassing (dreams, parenting, neuroses, war) Complexity/details/levels of analysis- make for great literature
