Blake Best 3/19/08 Soci 3800 Book Report Fast Food Nation Eric Schlosser’s book Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Mea l may seem like another non-fiction book, only more appalling. The book itself isn’t rubbish, however the subject matter discussed isn’t for the weak-stomached. While Schlosser’s intent is to paint an ugly picture of the fast food industry, it alone cannot take full blame for the larger social implications it creates. Individuals are responsible too. There are two major points to the story, “The American Way“ and Meat and Potatoes.“ The former discusses many facts of the fast food industry, from the raising of chickens to the global expansion of the industry. First, I would like to discuss the opening section, which chronicles the rise of the individuals and companies behind the business enterprise. The era proceeding World War II was a time of great economic security for middle class whites. The country had just endured the Great Depression and World War II. Many of the fast food chains we know today were started in this time period. McDonalds was franchised by Ray Kroc, after he learned of the original businesses’ success (Schlosser, 14). The men behind the industry seem to have predominately followed in Ray Kroc’s footsteps, by dropping out of high school and studying his every move. Domino’s, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, were all started after the success of
