[ P i c k t h e d a t e ] Astronomy 1001, Section 02, Spring Semester 2008 Study Sheet for the Second Mid-semester Examination 1. The Laws of Light: The Electromagnetic Spectrum o The electromagnetic (EM) spectrum is just a name that scientists give a bunch of types of radiation when they want to talk about them as a group. Radiation is energy that travels and spreads out as it goes. Nature of electromagnetic radiation/waves o It can travel through empty space. Other types of waves need some sort of medium to move through o The speed of light is constant in space . All forms of light have the same speed of 299,800 kilometers/second o A wavelength of light is defined by the distance between crests or between troughs. Relationships between light speed, wavelength, frequency, and energy o Wave/particle properties of light o The Doppler Shift (Red Shifts and Blue Shifts) o Light from moving objects will appear to have different wavelengths depending on the relative motion of the source and the observer. o
