Concept Abstraction Notion Elements o Substance – rule/regulation that is written down/recorded or commonly understood o Structure – mechanism in place to deal with someone who violates substance o Legal Culture – the people involved o Impact Public Policy – someone affected public policy to change it from how it was before Public policy - formal or informal rules affecting our lives Example: Bush v. Gore o Substance: laws dealing with counting votes o Structure: state courts fed courts o Legal culture: Judges, state to supreme court o Impact: Bush/Gore, all of us, current/future elections Federal Law Federal courts o 3 level courts District Courts Appellate/Circuit Courts Supreme Court – does not have to take case, can send back down to circuit court; 4 or 5 must vote to take case Constitution = foundation, supreme law of the land o Statutes Many criminal and civil cases will be under state jurisdiction State Law State courts o
