o Killing prisoners = condoning murder, the very crime they are convicted  of o Rebuttal: prisoner conscious for 35 minutes after first dosage of lethal  injection How many times are executioners fully trained? Paralytic chemical before final dose 100% conscious during  procedure, feels all pain but cannot express the pain Properly trained personnel should be able to find vein  useable  despite drug use Con (not cruel and unusual) o Nurses, paramedics, trained prison personnel administer drugs except  in Texas (untrained volunteers) o More successful lethal injections than not o Mistakes do happen, not reason enough to declare unconstitutional o “Hot poker effect” much better than old execution methods  (electrocution = head on fire) o Rebuttal: suffocation is also used to carry out death penalty already Surgeries go wrong in hospitals as well, but people don’t avoid  them because of the minute possibility of error
