Business CaseProblem Statement/ScenarioThe newly-appointed Director of Analytics of a Canadian FMCG (Fast-moving consumergoods) company has noticed that there are several structural problems in the analyticsinfrastructure and data governance policy of the company. Each major product sold by thecompany has its own department (product-based departmentation). The company lacks aproper workflow related to its analytical processes, leading to duplication of efforts –wasting time and resources. The use of different software/analytics software by differentdepartments also leads to incompatibility issues, and lack of consistency across reports, anddata standards. Acknowledging these issues, the Director has taken the initiative tointroduce major reforms in the company’s analytics workflow. We have been tasked withleading the project for this initiative. The initiative is a major undertaking as the company has a large size (about 2,000employees). There are also deep-rooted issues in organizational workflow that must beaddressed – thus, requiring re-training of certain employees. Furthermore, the company’smanagement wants any solution to be secure – the data privacy of the company’s customersmust be respected.Assessment of current state/situation of thecompanyThe company lacks a Data Strategy; i.e., it lacks a logical plan related to the management, sharing, and usage of data. While the company is able to capture huge amounts of data fromits various operations, it has no coherent plan for its usage. As a result, a lot of analyticalefforts are duplicated by each department. Often, the same data is extracted from thedatabase and cleansed multiple times by different departments - leading to a waste of timeand resources. In other words, the company has scattered silos of data which are notmanaged properly. Furthermore, there is a lack of a uniform data-naming scheme leading toconfusion among different departments, and frustrating inter-departmental collaboration.
