Allie Macleod Art Humanities Our Modern Reception of Antiquity A question that has been asked over and over and will probably continue to be asked over and over again is the same question I cannot help but ask too, how is it that a style of architecture created centuries ago can still be reflected throughout modern society today in such an upstanding way without appearing run down and or old (in the negative sense of not being new)? Today, modern architecture is faced with the challenge of re- interpreting ancient architecture and incorporating it into contemporary structures without appearing antiquated or out of style. This is because “today we find it difficult to accept that art might progress by looking back for we automatically believe that most things fifty years old are out of date and irrelevant to us? (Greenhalgh 31). However, after walking across campus, it becomes clear, at least in my opinion, that Columbia’s architecture demonstrates many of the stylistic tendencies from the Greco-
