1 Culture Industry Culture today is something that is constantly changing and it is truly hard to easily define what is really going on in our culture. Industries that are within culture have also been changing over time and are just as hard to understand what is going on within them as it is with cultures themselves. In The Culture Industry , by Horkheimer and Adorno, these two authors examine the changing culture and the general idea of the culture industry as a whole. They are not pleased with what is going in society today with the culture industry and are overall very bitter about everything. They start off the piece talking about how mass culture is the same under a monopoly. “The people at the top are no longer so interested in concealing a monopoly: as its violence becomes more open, its power grows.” Monopolies are slowly killing the industries according to Horkheimer and Adorno because they destroy competition and they get so much power that no one can compete with them anymore. The industry that is focused on in this piece is the culture industry. The first part of the industry that they examine is the technological section of this industry.
