#4, Episode: The Battle of France (1939-1940) (May 10, 1940-June 22, 1940) Maginot line = fortifications on Franco-German border : a line of fortifications constructed by the French along the border between France and Germany before World War II that failed to stop the German army from invading I. How the episode/theme came about Following the Polish September Campaign of the preceding year, a period of inaction called the Phony War had occurred between the war's major powers. In April 1940, the Germans had launched an attack on the neutral countries of Denmark and Norway for strategic reasons. French and British didn’t expect such a rapid defeat in Poland, and the rapid victory, relying on a new form of mobile warfare, put some generals in London and Paris at unease. The Allies believed that the Germans could be defeated by blockade (like WWI) France seen as a leading military force. Phillippe Petain was convinced that the defense was always going to have an advantage over the offense .
