Exercise 4-1 Research question A investigates a relationship between concepts. In this case it is looking for people’s attitudes about the environment and if it varies depending on their income. a. There is a correlation between a person’s income and their attitude toward the environment. b. Global warming, pollution, and water sanitation are the three environmental problems most frequently mentioned by South African high school students. Exercise 4-2 This hypothesis could be improved in several ways. First the word intention could be removed because it is too vague a concept. Almost everyone intends to vote but the reality is that many people do not. If you don’t intend to vote you most likely do not care about politics and there fore feel neither satisfaction nor dissatisfaction politically. Also limiting the research to the 2004 election will only give you a small range of numbers. If the sample space is expanded across many elections you have more numbers to work with and are there fore more reliable to base a conclusion from. Those who vote regularly show a higher rate of political satisfaction than people who do
