Page 1 of 6 Correlation and Regression Pearson correlation What it does The Pearson correlation is used to determine whether an interval or ratio variable is linearly related to another interval or ratio variable. Running the test in SPSS 1) From the Analyze menu, select Correlate , and then Bivariate … . 2) Move the variables of interest into the Variables box. 3) Ensure that the Pearson box is checked. 4) Click on OK . Interpreting the SPSS output The SPSS output consists of a grid in which each variable in the analysis appears once in each column, and once in each row of the grid. Each cell within the grid reports the correlation between the corresponding column and row variables. Three numbers are reported in each cell. The top number is the Pearson correlation (r in APA format). The Pearson correlation is followed by one or two asterisks if the correlation is statistically significant. Below the Pearson correlation is the p- value, which SPSS labels Sig. (2 –tailed). The bottom number in each cell is the number of cases used in calculating the correlation (N or n in APA format). Correlations are positive when an increase in one variable tends to be accompanied by an increase in the other variable. Correlations are negative when an increase in one variable tends to be accompanied by a decrease in the other variable. Reporting results in APA format 1) If you had a non-significant result, begin with this sentence: [ Describe first variable ] was not significantly correlated with [ describe second variable ]. If you had a significant result, begin with this sentence: [ Describe first variable ] was significantly correlated with [ describe second variable ]. Be sure you substitute appropriate wording for the descriptions of the variables. An example would be Anger scores was significantly correlated with height. 2) Correct the grammar of your sentence as needed. For example, if your sentence reads “Anger scores were significantly correlated with height,” change this to “Anger scores were significantly correlated with height.” 3) Immediately before the period at the end of the sentence, insert a comma and this sequence:
