9.4.3 Chapter 9 – Inequalities of Racism and Ethnicity I) Race – a social construction based on physical criteria II) Ethnic Group – culturally distinct group a. A group is minority or majority on the basis of which group occupies lower then average social status III) Stereotypes a. Reinforce racial and ethnic prejudices and cause them to persist in society b. Both racial and gender stereotypes receive ongoing support in the media c. Serves to justify and make legitimate the oppression of groups based on race, ethnicity and gender IV) Interactions Between Majority and Minority Groups Fall into 4 Categories : a. Conflict occurs when a struggle over scarce resources is not governed by shared “rules of engagement” b. Accommodation occurs when distinctive cultures or subcultures live in harmony c. Acculturation occurs when members of a minority group takes on the culture of the majority group (through there will still be some distinctions between the groups) d. Assimilation has occurred when social distinctions between a majority and a minority group have fallen away V) 2 Important Points About Majority/Minority Groups:
