They are very important for an organism's survival since theycan affect one’s ability to interact with its surroundings. According to chapter 7 section7.2 of the open education resource called CH103: Allied Health Chemistry published bythe Western Oregon University, there are six major types of biological reactions thatenzymes can mediate: namely, the group transfer reactions, the formation/removal ofcarbon-carbondoublebonds,isomerization reactions, ligation reactions, hydrolysisreactions, and oxidation-reduction reactions.I.DiffusionWhen biochemical processes are spoken of, the topic of transport processes isalso ineluctable. This is because transport processes are an essential component ofbiological function. There are two forms of transportation: passive transportation—atype of transport in which ions or molecules travel along a concentration gradient, orfromahigherconcentrationareatoalowerconcentrationarea—andactivetransportation—atypeoftransportinwhichionsormoleculesmoveagainstaconcentration gradient, from a low-concentration area to a high-concentration area, andnecessitates the use of energy as well as the aid of proteins. There are many kinds oftransport but for this particular lab report, the students will be focusing on the passivetransport known as diffusion.The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics of the University ofArizona defines diffusion as the net movement of particles (molecules) from a high to alow concentration area. It is crucial to cells because it helps them to collect thenecessary components for energy and growth, as well as dispose of waste products.II.Sugar and Salt Solutions
Ourbody constantly uses and needs specific compounds, such as sodiumchloride (salt) and sucrose (sugar), for it to function properly and maintain homeostasis.As we intake foods with either salt or sugar, they are ingested by our body and into thebloodstream, wherein they are transported throughout the body for them to accomplishtheir roles.Minerals such as sodium chloride (salt) are classified as electrolytes, which aresolutes that dissociate into water, turning them into ions that allow conduction ofelectricity (James Lewis, 2020). As the sodium chloride is divided into sodium andchloride ions, the dissociated ions will freely move in the solution which allows a chargeto flow through them. Moreover, the concentration of the ions affects how easily thecharge flows through them, increasing the solute concentration also increases theconductivity (Sciencing, March 2018). These electrolytes have several functions withinthe body, such as the regulation of fluid balance through osmosis, the control of muscleand nerve functions, and the blood pressure and blood acidity (Adam Felman, October2021).In
