1) Review: Post-Peter and Anne (1730-1740) Anne picked because she was a widow, wouldn’t have German outside influence cause German prince husband was dead, told she can’t marry, told she can’t pick who comes next, counsel thought she was controllable, she ripped up the contract and did her own thing, allowed to do it because she was tsarina and Peter’s relative, Anne was a drinker, gambler, hunter, thought unacceptable and scandalous, acted same way Peter but since she was a women she received a negative connotation in history 2) Elizabeth (1741 – 1761) a) Peter’s daughter should have been natural successor to Peter and Catherine, had a happy childhood, was too young to take power b) Her reign inherited the crown, banished the parents of the child Anne picked to inherit the throne, continued westernization and modernization of the culture, brings back the counsel after Anne banishes them, brought opera to Russia, construction of huge palaces, lavish style of living, bankrupts
