YOUR SHORTENED TITLE IN CAPSAnalyzing a Short Story and a PlayWhen reading certain literary works we are sometimes able to see the similarities anddifferences between them. Noticing these similarities and differences is what helps us to digdeeper into the story in order to set them apart. The purpose of this paper is to compare andcontrast “The Proposal” by Anton Chekhov, and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by JamesThurber. These literary works share the same theme of gender roles and marriage. “TheProposal” is a play/drama, and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” is a short story. In this analysisI will examine the content, form, and style of both literary works. Content is one of the most important elements in any literary work. It helps the reader tounderstand what the meaning behind the story is. “The Proposal” has three main charactersStephan (a land owner), Natalya (his daughter), and Ivan (a neighbor). The play starts off withIvan coming over dressed up to propose to Stephan’s daughter. When first reading the beginningof this play I thought that Ivan was a homosexual male. These thoughts were formed because ofhow Stephan addressed him as “my darling”, “my angel”, and “my treasure” [ CITATION Clu \l1033 ]. After reading further I realized that this is the way Stephan addresses Ivan. Ivan alsoreveals to himself that he’s truly not interested in Natalya, but he would rather settle with herthan wait to find true love. What makes this play entertaining is how the characters exaggeratethe arguments between each other. Ivan comes to propose to Natalya, but ends up arguing with
