Anth 2A – 1 February 2007 LECTURE NOTES ETHNICITY AND NATIONALISM Ethnicity is social category and therefore culturally constructed. It is a complex mix of ancestry, culture, self-identification and identification by others. Ethnicity is based on shared cultural heritage Fredik Barth described ethnicity as “ the social organization of cultural difference o Yugoslavia and then Kosovo o Tutsis and Hutus in Rwanda o The so-called Aryans and the Jews in Nazi Germany Clifford Geertz described ethnicity it as “ personal identity collectively ratified and publicly expressed ”. Ethnicity is a way of classifying – or organizing – people into ethnic boundaries between groups Language o Francophone and Anglophone Canadians o Native American languages o Welsh and Gaelic in schools in Wales and Scotland o Britons of Pakistani descent speaking Urdu to their kids Notions of Shared Descent o In Southern California immigrant peoples o American ex-pats o North Dakota immigrants
