Dr. Carole Lynn Stewart -- Group Assignments – English 307 Guidelines for group-guided discussions : 15% of grade (5% for in-class performance in which all group members receive the same grade; 10% for individual mark based on written report and in-class performance) Group-guided discussions are designed to enhance student-centered or student-oriented inquiry, to let students take more initiative and responsibility for reading and analyzing theories in the course. Each group conducts one group-guided discussion, which will take approximately 40 minutes . The group in charge will function as a coordinator, introducing the topic and the text or author, initiating class discussion and navigating it in a productive direction. (Be careful not to spend too much time on biographical detail; some may be important, but make sure it relates to the text.) The group can spend a bit of time (no more than ten minutes) introducing their author, historical background, and main issues. The main point of the discussion, however, is to pose questions to the class about the reading, calling attention to important passages, and questioning textual elements, such as, but not limited to, tone, imagery, characterization, genre, symbol or audience. For instance, you might focus on the critical reception and any stereotypical images and what effect they would have on audience. You should focus on a few main passages in the text. The group will listen to everyone’s responses and comments, appreciating and encouraging
