Wed. 1/16/08 History2B: lecture 5 How is it possible that a single nomadic group came to dominate so fast and at such a grand scale? - geography o there were no real barriers o also worked as a safe haven for them - Mongols had to defeat large empires (Persian, Chinese, Islamic) - Can divide Mongol conquest into 3 phases o Genghis Kahn 1211-1220 conquered Northern China 1219-1221 conquered Persian empire 1223 went far west died in 1227, by that time Mongol empire was 4x larger o Mongol conquest, 1230’s Russia was sacked Mongols invade Europe o Mongols conquest 1250-1270’s Conquer all of China by 1270’s - Mongol motives? o Unified the Mongol people (single nation) o Geography; needed agricultural and urban products (grain, pottery, iron tools, cloth) Needed more than just their animals to survive Expansion from steppes brought closer to sedentary peoples and their wealth Needed more pasture lands for horses A cold spell in late 10’s may have declines pasture in Mongolian
