Wed. 1/30/08 History2B: lecture 10 Tenochtitlan - 2 nd largest city in the world in 1500s - built on artificial islands, surrounded and protected by water on all sides - Chinampa farming; “floating” agricultural islands; propelled imperial campaign - Allied with two others Aztec empire (1519c) o Allies did not have standing armies, only the Aztecs Aztec human sacrifice - Ritualistic - Massive amounts of people killed through sacrifice (most were prisoners of war) - Believed it would take the blood of human beings for the sun to rise every morning; based on a theory that the universe would collapse after 50 years if the gods were not strong enough Mexica imperial society - Advanced civilization o Mandatory education (regardless of social status), bureaucrats, judges - Educated military nobility at top of rigid hierarchy o Controlled the riches and labor forces o Received land grants and tribute from commoners (commoners sustained the empire) o Their council selected the ruler - Priests ranked among elite
