Unformatted text preview: Liberal Democracy in America 8/31/07 Declaration of Independence: Declares independence to not just America or British parliament, but to ‘all mankind’. Jefferson’s goal to summarize the thoughts of all Americans. Americans believe these things because they are free and these beliefs are self evident for free people. The truths are self evident to free people. –All men are created equal – Equally entitled to same natural rights. Continental Congress: some against slavery; some for slavery. Blacks inferior race, therefore, slavery justified. Jefferson- slavery unjust but doesn’t know what to do about it. ‘Tortured’ over decision on where to stand. 9/3/07 Federalist Papers-newspaper written in New York. Were written for more educated/rich people. 10 and 51 are very important to read. Read for ideas and themes that show up in multiple articles. The target audience was in most cases were the people who could be persuadable politically. In 6,23,25 politicians all say stuff that are unpopular. They tell the public that they are wrong and need to change politicians all say stuff that are unpopular....
