In the New York Times , the initial reporting of Sputnik I successfully being launched into orbit by the Russians was released with a sense of shock and surprise rather than something that had been expected. Although the White House announced that they expected an approaching launch of a satellite into space by the Russians, the New York Times had no articles on an imminent launch of Russian satellites prior to October 5, 1957, the day after Sputnik I went into orbit. All Americans, as well as the New York Times , seemed to be taken aback by the successful launch. Moreover, the New York Times reported that democratic senators criticized the republican government for Sputnik and claimed that cutting costs, especially on missile research, led to the Russians
