Prevalence of Suicide in the U.S. There are approximately 30,000 completed suicides in the U.S. every year¹ (1 person every 16 minutes). It is the 2 nd leading cause of death among college students (exceeded only by auto accidents). Among 15-19 yr olds, the rate has nearly tripled since 1960 (has remained relatively constant for other age ranges).
