TheOccupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sector of the United States Departmentof Labor developed a tool that companies and organizations could utilize to safeguard theirpersonnel from injury and disaster. This tool is known is an Emergency Action Plan (EAP).OSHA developed specific standards that are outlined in29 CFR 1910.38(a)that employers mustfollow where it applies. Although I am not a parent, I was able to observe a good friend of mine’sson at basketball practice. I was also able to talk to the coaches and athletic trainers to get insighton what their policies and procedures were for serious incidents as well as their EAP.To begin, Kingston is a 5-year-old energizer bunny who has loved the sport of basketballsince watching his first game with his father as a smaller child. You can see the passion in himand the rest of the kids on the court. Given the organization is predominately made up of gradeschool children, the precautions taken to keep them safe is all inclusive. For this specificorganization, the child(ren) must undergo a medical examination and get written clearance froma licensed medical provider granting permission for participation in the sport during theregistration process. Some parents saw it as an unnecessary fee, while others praised thethoroughness of the organization and the steps that are taken to ensure every athlete is clear ofany underlying medical issue. In my observation of his practice, I did note seeing two athletictrainers on site. There are two sites for practice, an indoor court, and an outdoor court. The
