Samantha Moore Essay #2 “In Politics and the English Language” George Orwell proposes that modern political writing is meaningless. Ideas are expressed in such vague and abstract terms that they fail to impact readers. Applying Orwell’s proposition to the current immigration debate unfolding in the current editorial pages reveals that although editorialists aim to provide “a voice to the voiceless” and serve as “independent monitors of power” (Kovach 5), their use of trite language weakens their opinions. The title of an editorial from the San Antonio Express-News , overstates things from the very beginning: “An Enlightened Stance on Immigration Reform”. The word enlightened has immense weight in terms of vocabulary. The definition of enlightenment according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is “a full and comprehensive understanding of all problems involved”. Unfortunately, Governor Rick Perry’s moderate and uninspired view support of immigration reform to “help grow our economy” (Express-News 1) is hardly the stuff of transcendent thinking.
