Melissa Fuller PS101A April 3, 2008 Ch. 10 Reaction Paper Everywhere you look people are telling you to be skinny; in the magazines, newspapers and the television. This makes young adults have less self confidence and self esteem and makes them believe they have to change the way they look in order to fit it. This often leads to them wanting to drastically lose weight and can lead to eating disorders. People who suffer for obesity have lower self esteem than the average person. Since they do not fit the mold of what is in the media, they feel a sense of loneliness and sadness. They feel isolated and they feel like no one will like them because they are overweight. When obese people go on diets they sometimes build up their confidence levels, because they finally feel like they will fit in. It is the same for people that have eating disorders. They see models and celebrities that are incredibly skinny and they feel that is what they should look like. They think they are overweight, when usually they aren’t, and they want to lose weight as quickly as possible. They
