The Vietnam War is still surrounded by controversy even after all these years. Regardless of whether or not America should have entered the war, the Vietnam War era is a famous and significant part of American history. I will compare my knowledge of the Vietnam War from the beginning of the semester to my knowledge after reading several passages in Negotiating Difference. Initially, I felt the war was unnecessary and a loss to America in more ways than one. The Vietnam War destroyed lives on both sides. People fled across the border into Canada to escape the draft. The war was televised for everyone to watch the horror that took place overseas. The Vietnam War devastated young men and their friends and families. America did not win the war, which was a little surprising and embarrassing because America was seen as the most powerful country in the world. The country was split during this time; many people who protested the war were called anti-American. Most of my knowledge came from high school history classes and the movie Forrest Gump , but I was not really clear on details of the war. I did not learn much about the Vietnam War in high school. I do remember learning that America was afraid of the domino theory, where communism would spread across the globe, threatening our interests as a free country. America went to war with
