08/22/2012 ° Capitalism in Europe ° The Apogee of Europe - superiority of Europeans compared to the rest of the world: Not race-related; “educated, skilled population; culture rewarding innovation; massive industrial productivity; near monopoly of military force” Science and Technology: o Scientific revolution (drawing on inspirations from Arab and Chinese backgrounds, but happens in Europe) o rational enquiry (believed in by Europeans, and led to many inventions) o machine invention (telegraph, locomotive) o Universities as an institution (ability to get to a level of higher education) Capitalist Economy o Industrialization (child labor, ect.) o Protestant Work Ethic o Capitalism (and used investments to widely control the world; other nations in debt, ect.) o Marxism (criticism of capitalism…socialism) o Liberalism (Adam Smith, and various successors) – free trade system Individualistic Society o Individualism (secularism; new in history opposed to belonging to different groups, classes, religions, ect.) o Physical and Social Mobility (more dynamic population; no class limitations) o Growing Middle Classes o Urbanization o Population Explosion (rapid growth) o Emigration Military Power o Superiority of New Weapons

o More Efficient Organization (command structures, planned warfare, ect.) o Sense of Invincibility (but also a sense of arrogance) Efficient Bureaucracy o Expanding state power (through investments, ect.) o Meritocracy (getting jobs by credentials rather than social connections and kin) o Taxation (government doing things for you; an exchange of sorts with government programs to make Europe more powerful overall) Spirit of Nationalism o Nation-state (idea that you should not live in a multi-ethnic empire, but instead share religion, interests, ect. and even race) o Nationalism (highly ambivalent or highly discriminative; irrational, emotional, mobilizes, reason to live/die) o Chauvinism (out-of-hand nationalism; division of people = counterproductive – Nazi Germany) Constitutional Government o Terms to know: Constitutional monarchy, republic, citizenship, suffrage, liberalism, conservatism Balance of Power System o Hegemony o Pentarchy o System of Alliances (alliances made so that no one is too strong) o Adjustments though war o Both positive and negative Key Terms: Capitalism, liberalism, republic, constitutional monarchy, Marxism, nationalism, balance of power, conservationism °
