American Pageant Reading Guide Chapter 33 1. Describe the rise of Franklin Roosevelt to the presidency in 1932. Roosevelt preached of a New Deal for Americans to get them out of the depression they were currently in. He also bashed Republican motives for fixing the depression and made many promises that he intended to keep. As Roosevelt was elected, it was announced as a ruin to the Republican Party. He lifted the spirits of Democrats and Americans, successfully beating Hoover in the Election of 1932. He met with Hoover to discuss the depression before Hoover left office. 2. Explain how the early New Deal pursued the “three R’s” of relief, recovery, and reform. From day one, Roosevelt moved to lift the depression from Americans before meeting with Democrats to create the New Deal. His New Deal programs aimed at relief, recovery, and reform. Relief and recovery were Roosevelt’s first goals that he wanted to accomplish in the first two years. Permanent recovery and reform were long-term. 3. Describe the New Deal’s effect on labor and labor organizations. Roosevelt wasn’t hesitant to use money to help the unemployed, so that he was able to get the financial cycle to roll once more.
