Garrett Brnger 2/21/08 Lecture 9 (Lecture 10 overall) 1. MODERNIZATION THEORY (Rostow, Lerner, Inkeles) a. All of the great masters of economics in Europe wanted to name a theory b. Focused on different aspects of society, like social interactions c. Weber saw bureaucracy as a purely modern phenomenon (increased rational) d. Marx focused on transformation from feudal to social to capitalist to communist state. (Each stage had its own seeds of destruction sown within) e. 1959- Cuban Revolution (influenced by Marx) i. African nations start to rebel against their colonial oppressors Aspects of Modernization - Evolutionary & Unlinear, Ahistoric - The o LDCs should follow model of DCs o Only one path o Used DCs as a measuring stick o Didn’t take history into account (such as colonialism) - Westernization, Secularism, Urbanism o How exposed are they to Western media (Do you know who the US President is) o How do people in these countries measure up to those in Western eyes o Less religious=more modern o The more urban=the more modern (80% of US lives in cities)
