Westernization, modernization theory- Draws on an idealized version of American history- Countries should follow our example 2. Culture of Poverty thesis- Used to describe shortcomings of societies- Culture of the poor keeps them poor- Popularized by Oscar Lewis, The Children of Sanchez o Argued that it was a culture of despair, hopelessness, and lack of organization o Hopeless Don’t try Don’t succeed o Wanted to know how this culture came about o Argued that it came from a capitalist or post-capitalist society o Post-revolution, people are hopeful- Is not totally right- Problems could be lack of education, lack of jobs, etc. 3. Human Capital theory/Education- Look at humans as a source of investment- If you invest in people, your economy will do much better- Belief in education- The more educated you are, the more successful you will be a.
