CONDITIONS IN PREREVOLUTIONARY CUBA - dependence on US & on sugar - (CLASSIC DEPENDENCE) - much inequality (land, race, income) o Poor and uneducated masses - unemployment &underemployment - corrupt government - Castro tried to gain power by legal, electorate means, but Batista blocked him - July 26, 1923 led coup d’état but was arrested o Famous “History will absolve me” speech - Castro escapes and hides with Che Guevara 2. COLD WAR 3. GOALS OF THE REVOLUTION 1. A populist nationalist revolution - Nationalize everything 2.
