18 March 2008 Morocco Pre-Colonial - Indigenous Monarchy - 4 Royal capitals - State strength rose and fell - Was not ever a French Colony Saharan Trade - Lots of pot - People traded as well o Concubines - Grape vines (for wine, it’s a French protectorate after all) Sultanete - Moroccan sultans claim to be descended from Muhamed - Reports on French mention “lack of harlots in palace”, “superior organization European Connection Debt - Imported lots of crazy stuff like cloth - At first the Moroccan could play the European powers against each other b/c they didn’t want to have other European neighbors Protectorate 1912 - The French managed to control Morocco by allying themselves with powerful families (Tommy Gnawa) - Bought up a bunch of real estate Mendal H. Lyautey: a case study of city planning - Built around the traditional area (The Medina), in an effort to preserve it (la ville nouvelle) - Had figured that the people in rural areas would want to stay there. Didn’t take that into account in the cities
