The later immigrants differed from earlier immigrants from Italy From Southern Italy, most were poor and illiterate, peasants, little industrialization, poor health conditions, and exploited by the ruling class of the region Settlement and Characteristics of Immigrants Early emigrants from northern Italy – Literate, artisan, shopkeepers and professionals The difference changed the class/culture of Italians in the US US needed unskilled workers for factories and construction projects.
