Ch 10 Hispanic Americans Facts about Hispanic/ Latino Americans. . There are more people of Mexican origin in Los Angeles than in all but one city in Mexico. In New York City, there are more Puerto Ricans than in San Juan. Hispanic Americans number more than 37 million, 13.3% of the total American population. Mexicans have surpassed the African-Americans by small margin in population. Manner of Entry to the US During the 20 th century Hispanics arrived as voluntary immigrants The American Southwest was part of Mexico before being annexed by the US in 1848 after the Mexican War. Puerto Rico became a territory of the US in 1898; Puerto Ricans are not technically immigrants – they have a distinct foreign culture. Cubans – voluntary immigration, “seldom has a foreign group come to the US so well prepared educationally and occupationally and seldom has this country received it so well” Mexican Americans : History Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1810. In 1835-1836, the colony revolted and established itself as an independent republic.
